Bringing your partner home to meet your parents
For bringing your partner home to meet your parents: a kurta set or simple dress you can sit in easily, hair neat, and the move of doing the introductions yourself with one good detail each way.

The doorbell is about to ring, or you are about to open the door yourself. Your partner is on the stairs with a box of sweets. Your mother has already changed the sofa cover twice, and your father is sitting very straight with the newspaper. This is the first five seconds, and you are the one who starts them.
The look
Choose what your parents find respectful and you find comfortable. You may be sitting on a sofa and getting up to serve tea, so pick clothes you can move in.
- Modest option: a kurta set in a soft solid colour, such as dusty pink, sage or navy, in cotton or linen. Keep the dupatta light enough that you are not adjusting it all evening.
- Modern option: a simple knee-length or longer dress in one plain colour, with a thin cardigan or shirt over it if your home likes covered shoulders.
- One small detail: the earrings you wear every week, or a bangle your mother gave you. Something that is already yours.
Hair: neat and off your face. A low bun, a single braid, or hair loose but pinned back on one side. Whatever you pick, try it once before the day so you do not need to touch it during the evening.
The one confidence move
Before they arrive, tell each side one good thing about the other. To your mother: "Arjun asked which of your recipes he should try first." To your partner, at the gate: "Papa likes cricket. Ask him about last week's match." Then do the introductions yourself, standing between them, with one good detail each way. You do not wait to be introduced, and you do not leave it to chance.
What to say first
Say it out loud, in your own voice, and keep it short:
"Papa, this is Arjun. Mummy, you two have the same taste in old songs."
Use your partner's real name and a real detail. The line gives both sides something to ask about.
If it goes sideways
The likeliest wobble is a silence, when everyone has smiled and nobody has a sentence. Do not rush to fill it with nerves. Stand up and move to the food: "Mummy made this since morning, come, try it." Or bring out the photo album and open it to one photo with a story. Food and photographs give people something to hold and something to talk about, and you stay the host of your own evening.
One thing to try today
Tonight, write two short notes on your phone. On one, a topic your parents can ask your partner about, such as their work, their city or a match they follow. On the other, a topic your partner can ask your parents about, such as how they met or the house you grew up in. Tell each side their topic in one line before the day. Then stand at the mirror once, in the outfit, and say your first line three times.
