Your first solo trip: the hotel desk asks, "Only one, madam?"
For your first solo trip: a long kurta with leggings or jeans with a loose shirt, a braid that lasts the journey, and the move of putting your ID on the desk and answering in two words.

- everyday

You have been travelling since morning. Your bag is at your feet, and you reach the hotel desk. The man looks past you, towards the door, and asks, "Only one, madam?"
It is a small second. It is easy to feel that you owe him a reason. You do not, and you can walk in already knowing that.
The look
Dress for the journey first. You are sitting, walking and carrying your own bag all day.
- The modest option: a long cotton kurta in a dark colour, with leggings and a light stole around your neck.
- The modern option: straight jeans with a loose shirt in a strong colour, worn open over a plain top.
- The hair: one long braid, tied at the end with a firm band, so you have nothing to fix at the desk.
- The one small detail: a stole or scarf that can be a wrap in a cold lobby, a cover on a long drive, or just something to hold.
All of this can come from your own cupboard or a sister's. Choose what you have already travelled in and felt like yourself.
The one confidence move
Put your ID on the desk before he asks for it. Place it flat, with one hand resting beside it. Then answer in two words and stop talking. The pause after your answer is his to fill, not yours. It may feel long to you, and it is an ordinary length for him.
What to say first
Say this, in your normal voice:
Yes, one. The booking is under ...
Then say your name, and that is the whole sentence.
If it goes sideways
He may ask, "Family is coming later?" Keep the same calm and the same length:
No, just me. Which floor?
No reason after it, and no apology. Take the key, pick up your bag and go.
One thing to try today
Before you leave for the trip, stand in your room and say "Yes, one" out loud, twice. Hear how short it is. Then share your live location with one person you trust, before you set out.
