The first meeting for an arranged match, when the tea is poured and it is your turn to talk

For the first meeting of an arranged match: a kurta set, light saree or plain dress in a colour you love, hair open or in a soft low bun, and the move of asking as many questions as you answer.

  • relationships

The tea has been poured and the families have said their hellos. Now the two of you are left to talk, while an uncle studies the ceiling to give you some room. It is the first meeting for an arranged match, and you are there to know a person, not to pass a test.

The look

Choose the one you have worn before and felt like yourself in.

  • Modest: a simple kurta set in a colour you love, such as deep green, mustard or maroon, in soft cotton. Pin the dupatta at the shoulder so your hands stay free. A light saree in one solid colour with a plain blouse works the same way.
  • Modern: a plain dress in a calm colour, knee length or longer, with a light jacket over it. This suits a café.
  • One small detail: the earrings you wear every week. Nothing new, nothing you will touch.

For your hair, wear it open and brushed back behind the ears, or in a soft low bun. Pick whichever stays in place without you checking it.

The one confidence move

Sit with your back straight and your shoulders loose. Let your hands rest on your lap or around the cup. Keep both feet flat on the floor. When he speaks, look at him. When you think of an answer, it is fine to look away for a moment and come back.

Then keep a quiet count: ask as many questions as you answer. This is a conversation between two people, not an interview, and you are allowed to lead half of it.

What to say first

When the room settles, turn to him and say:

"What does a normal weekday look like for you?"

It is easy to answer, and it tells you how he really lives.

If it goes sideways

Sometimes a question comes too personal and too early, from him or from someone sitting nearby. You do not have to answer it in full. Say, with a smile:

"I'd like to know each other a little more first."

Take a sip of your tea, then ask your next question. The pause may feel long to you and ordinary to them.

One thing to try today

Before tonight, write three questions that matter to you on a small piece of paper or in your phone notes. They can be about work, about family, about how he spends a Sunday. Read them aloud once at the mirror, so the first one is already familiar to your mouth when the day comes.

Each Sunday, one moment coming up this week, the look for it and the one line to say first: /moments.

One moment a week.
