Your anniversary dinner, when both phones are on the table

For your anniversary dinner: the outfit you feel most like yourself in, hair as in an old photo you both like, and the move of putting both phones away and saying one thing you noticed this year.

The plates have come. Two glasses of water, a small candle, and your phone and theirs lying face up beside the bread. A message lights one screen, and you both look at it. That is the second this note is about: the dinner is yours, and the phones are asking for it.

The look

Wear what makes you feel most like yourself. If you love a saree, wear the one you have worn before and know how to carry. If a slip dress is your thing, put a light shawl or a jacket over it so you are not thinking about the air conditioning. If a kurta is your favourite, choose the one in your best colour, pressed and simple.

For hair, look for an old photo of the two of you that you both like. Copy the hairstyle in it: a loose braid, a low bun, hair left open behind your shoulders. It is a small private joke, and it needs no new product or salon visit.

One small detail is enough. Pick one: your favourite earrings, a bangle you wear every day, or the scent you always use.

The one confidence move

Put your phone face down, then into your bag. Do it slowly and without a speech. Look at them while you do it. Then wait. They may put theirs away too, and even if they do not, your hands are now free, and you are the one who began the evening.

Keep your hands on the table, open, near the candle. It gives you something calm to do while you wait.

What to say first

Once both phones are away, say this in your own words:

I noticed how you looked after everyone this year, and it meant a lot.

Change the middle to something true. It could be how they called their father each Sunday, how they cooked when you were tired, or how they sat with you on a hard night. Say one thing, not a list.

If it goes sideways

Suppose the phone rings anyway, or they pick it up out of habit. Smile, say, "Five minutes, then we are both off," and let them answer. Then turn back to your food. Do not make it a point. The line can wait for the next course, and it will still be true.

One thing to try today

Write your one line on a small card tonight, before the dinner. Use a blank card or a folded piece of paper, and write only the sentence. Read it aloud once at the mirror so the words feel familiar in your mouth, then slip it into your bag.
