Apple iPhone 17 (256GB)

Is the base iPhone 17 enough, or is the Pro worth more?

Read on 21 October 2026: all three editorial reviews of the base iPhone 17 praise its 120Hz display, 256GB storage and battery, two Indian guides say it is enough for most, and none of the reviews was written at Apple India's Rs 99,900.

The three editorial reviews are 12 to 13 months old and none is from an Indian outlet. The forum threads are from March and July 2026. A 16 September 2026 report says Apple raised the 256GB price to Rs 99,900, so no editorial review we read priced the phone as Apple India does now.

This is a reading of the base Apple iPhone 17 as sold in India: the 256GB model, which Apple India lists at Rs 99,900 on 21 October 2026, with the 512GB at Rs 1,24,900. We read three editorial reviews, all from international outlets, published between 26 September and 17 October 2025. We also read three news pieces and buying guides dated 11 September 2025 to 16 September 2026, two of them from Indian outlets, Apple India's own page, and two Apple Support Community threads from March and July 2026.

The Indian editorial tier is empty in this sample. Review pages from 91mobiles, The New Indian Express, Notebookcheck and PhoneArena returned HTTP 403, and nothing here rests on them. The owner tier is two forum threads, which show that a complaint exists and say nothing about how common it is.

Consensus

Across the three editorial reviews we read, the base iPhone 17 is a well-liked phone. All three, GSMArena, Tech Advisor and Macworld, praise the 120Hz ProMotion display. All three praise the 256GB of base storage, which doubles the earlier base model. All three describe battery life that lasts a full day. Two of the three, GSMArena and Macworld, single out the improved 18MP front camera.

These are launch-period reviews, written in dollars and pounds. None is from an Indian outlet and none discusses Rs 99,900. We read this as a clear editorial verdict on what the phone is, and no verdict at all on whether the rupee price is right. Our confidence is strong that editors like the phone, thin on how owners find it, and absent for Indian editorial reviews.

Recurring strengths

The display is the most praised feature: three of the three editorial reviews. Tech Advisor and Macworld cite a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and an always-on mode, and GSMArena describes a 120Hz LTPO OLED panel. Apple India lists a 6.3 inch display with ProMotion.

Storage is praised in three of three. Apple India lists 256GB and 512GB versions, and all three reviews note that the base now starts at 256GB.

Battery life is praised in three of three. Tech Advisor's reviewer, a heavy daily user, reports a full day and close to two on lighter days. Macworld puts battery life 21 per cent above the iPhone 16. GSMArena calls the efficiency strong for the size. Apple's own claim is up to 30 hours of video playback, which is a claim and not a result.

The front camera is praised in two of three, GSMArena and Macworld. GSMArena alone also praises video stabilisation across the lenses and lists IP68 protection as a strength.

Recurring complaints

The camera has limits that all three editorial reviews name. GSMArena lists the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens. Tech Advisor finds zoom and low-light photos underwhelming and the telephoto reach limited against the Pro. Macworld finds low-light shots weak, with Night Mode giving unrealistic results. Two of three raise low light, Tech Advisor and Macworld. Two of three raise the missing or limited telephoto, GSMArena and Tech Advisor.

Heat is the complaint with the least certain size. One of the three editorial reviews, GSMArena, lists heat and throttling during intensive tasks. Two Apple Support Community threads read as ordinary pages describe a phone running hot: one opened on 8 March 2026 after iOS 26.3 updates, with more than 15 responses across related threads, and one opened on 3 July 2026 with 13 replies, where the poster links the heat to using a music app and the camera together, or a messaging app over mobile data. Neither thread reports a confirmed fix, and repliers disagree on whether the cause is the update, the apps or ordinary use. Two threads show that owners describe the problem. They do not show how many owners have it, and a count of complaints is not a defect rate.

Single reviewers raised a few more. Tech Advisor found the AI features inconsistent. Macworld found the design largely unchanged and the Camera Control button prone to accidental presses. GSMArena lists USB 2.0 transfer speeds and quieter speakers than the last model.

Price is not a complaint any editorial review raises, because they pre-date the change. The two Indian guides from September 2025 quote a launch price of Rs 82,900 for the 256GB model. A TelecomTalk report dated 16 September 2026 says Apple's price has since risen to Rs 99,900, and that a retailer listing still showed Rs 82,900 on older stock. We report the change as that report and Apple India's page give it, and do not set one price against another as a finding.

Where reviewers split

Battery and heat divide editors from owner threads. Tech Advisor and Macworld describe battery that lasts a full day or more, and GSMArena rates its efficiency strongly. The two Apple threads describe heat and faster battery drain, one after an update. Threads collect people who have a problem, so neither side sizes the other.

Screen brightness is reported differently. Tech Advisor and Macworld cite a 3,000-nit peak, while GSMArena lists brightness capped at 1,000 nits among its cons. The pages we read do not say whether the two figures measure the same thing.

The camera splits within the same reviews. Tech Advisor praises the new 48MP ultra-wide and accurate colour, and GSMArena praises video stabilisation, yet Tech Advisor and Macworld both fault low-light photos.

The Pro against the base is the split the topic turns on. TelecomTalk says to choose the Pro only for the telephoto camera and that the base is enough otherwise, and the WION guide says the base suits messages, maps, social and light photos while creators who use ProRes video and several heavy apps are better served by the Pro. Macworld, of the editorial reviews, says the Pro's extra capabilities justify its premium for buyers who want premium features. These can all hold: they differ on who wants the extras.

Who it suits

You want the 120Hz display and 256GB of storage without paying for a Pro. All three editorial reviews praise both, and the TelecomTalk guide lists the base and the Pro as sharing a 6.3 inch 120Hz display.

You use a phone mainly for messages, maps, social media and light photography. The WION guide of 11 September 2025 points this reader to the base model.

You do not need a telephoto lens. TelecomTalk says the Pro earns its extra cost mainly for that camera, and that the base phone is enough otherwise.

Who should pass

You want a telephoto lens or strong low-light photos. GSMArena lists the missing telephoto, Tech Advisor and Macworld fault low light, and TelecomTalk lists the Pro's third 48MP camera.

You edit ProRes video or run several heavy apps together. The WION guide points creators and heavy users to the Pro, and TelecomTalk lists the Pro's 12GB of RAM against 8GB and its cooling chamber.

You are weighing the Rs 99,900 price itself. No editorial review we read was written at that price, and the one report on the change is a single news item. The two forum threads on heat describe a problem and do not size it.

This is a reading of published reviews, not medical, financial or legal advice. For a decision about your health, your money or your rights, a qualified professional is the right next step, and not a review.
