Who it's for, who should pass

It suits a reader who wants a long lens and a distinctive look; it does not suit one who wants a strong wide camera.

This reading covers the Nothing Phone (4a) as sold in India, the phone Nothing launched in March 2026 with a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, a periscope telephoto camera and a transparent back. We read six editorial reviews of this exact phone, dated 7 March to 2 April 2026 where a date was clear, and two further pages on 22 October 2026. Four of the six reviews price the phone in rupees. The other two, Expert Reviews and GSMArena, are international.

The sample has no buyer, forum or news tier. Forum threads and the price-report pages did not open as ordinary pages, and the buyer tier is empty because we do not collect buyer reviews one by one. Every review was written at launch, before the software updates and price changes that came after, so each count below is a launch-window reading.

Consensus

Across the reviews we read, the Phone (4a) is liked for its look, its telephoto camera and its screen. All six editorial reviews praise the telephoto camera and all six praise the design. Four praise the display and four praise the clean software.

The same reviews repeat two faults. Four of the six call the ultrawide camera average, middling or unchanged from last year's model. Four of the six find the IP64 dust and water rating short of what rivals offer. Our confidence in the editorial reading is strong for those two points and thin for anything about months of ownership, because no owner source was readable. Treat this as a reading of the reviews, not a measurement of the phone.

Recurring strengths

  • Telephoto camera: six of six editorial reviews praise the 3.5x periscope lens, one of them noting natural colour at long range.
  • Design: six of six editorial reviews single out the transparent look and the lit Glyph Bar.
  • Display: four of six editorial reviews praise the 1.5K screen's brightness and sharpness.
  • Software: four of six editorial reviews call Nothing OS 4.1 clean and quick.
  • Battery: three of six editorial reviews describe a full day of use. Expert Reviews measured less, as the split section shows.

The maker lists three years of operating system updates and six years of security patches, as Beebom's specification page reports it. That figure is the maker's claim.

Recurring complaints

  • Ultrawide camera: four of six editorial reviews (Smartprix, T2 Online, Beebom and Expert Reviews) call it average or middling. One notes it is unchanged from the previous model, and one notes a colour mismatch with the main lens.
  • IP64 rating: four of six editorial reviews (Smartprix, GSMArena, Beebom and Expert Reviews) say rivals offer higher protection against water and dust.
  • No charger in the box: two of six editorial reviews (Smartprix and GSMArena) raise it, and Beebom's specification page lists the box contents without an adapter.
  • Thick bezels: two of six editorial reviews say they look thicker than the specification suggests.
  • Selfie camera: two of six editorial reviews fault it, one for indoor detail and one for over-whitened faces.
  • SIM and eSIM limits: two of six editorial reviews raise them, one saying eSIM works in only one country and one saying a physical SIM is needed for setup.

Two further points come from one review each. Smartprix notes there is no NFC and that the fingerprint sensor sits low on the screen. A count of reviews that raise a complaint is not a defect rate, and no source we read reports how many owners meet any of these.

Where reviewers split

The IP64 rating. Four editorial reviews count it as a weakness against rivals. T2 Online reads the same rating as an improvement on the earlier phone and reports it as dunk-resistant for a short time. Both are true: it is better than before and below what some competitors list.

Battery life. Three editorial reviews describe a full day. Expert Reviews measured about 25 hours in a video loop and reports that as 5.5 hours below the Phone (3a) in its own test, which it counts against the phone. We read this as endurance that depends on how a reviewer uses it, not as a settled figure.

The price. Smartprix and T2 Online give a starting price of Rs 31,999, and Business Today puts it at about Rs 30,000. Beebom's specification page, read on 22 October, lists Rs 36,999 for its base listing and a different launch figure. Search headlines report price rises since launch, but the pages did not open. We give no single current price because the sources we could read disagree, and the variant names differ between them. T2 Online notes the price rose despite component costs.

Who it suits

Someone who wants a long lens and a distinctive look at a mid-range price is the reader the reviews support it for: six of six editorial reviews praise both. A reader who values a clean interface also fits, since four praise the software.

Who should pass

A reader who wants a strong wide-angle camera should look elsewhere, because four of six editorial reviews call it average. So should a reader who wants a higher dust and water rating, or a charger included, or contactless payment: one review reports no NFC.
